WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m glad so many people had told me negative things about The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe before I went – it meant I could see the slightly dodgy CGI, think, “Meh – heard about that!” and could get on with ignoring it!

Usually I avoid films staring children, but am pleased to report that the child-annoyance levels were relatively low. Tilda Swinton was a fab White Witch, despite some dodgy costumes and even dodgier rubber hench-things.

Overall it wasn’t fantastic, but it was fun, and while I don’t think it’s destined to be a huge classic, it probably will get dragged out every Christmas for the kids. This ‘big kid’ got to have a little moment of nostalgia, which was nice.

Oh, and I could even ignore all the Christian allegory stuff that spoiled my rememberance of the books before – really, if you’re not looking for it, you don’t have to see it!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I enjoyed this, but would recommend it for children rather than adults (note: no children whatsover in the cinema when we went to see it – one woman in the row behind was also sobbing v.loudly towards the end).

The books are fab and the film has matched up fairly closely, but parts are unforgivably cheesy and some of the dialogue, although true to the original, seems contrived. Go with an open mind.

Loved this movie. I grew up on the BBC versions, which I hear are pretty hilarious to watch now, some 15 years later… a classic story and pretty well done.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I met a VP of Walden Media this summer. He had quite a bit to say about books turned into films, and now I find I can’t separate his speech from my viewing experience. Walden Media, if you don’t know, acts as a sort of advocate of the text in Hollywood – not an easy task at all. I think the film achieved its own goal; it told the story with all necessary parts, evoked the right emotions and questions, and didn’t slip into utter gore (which seems to be the easy way to get ten yr olds to see movies – sad, right?).

I think the filmmakers made great choices. And I think the movie itself is a valuable text to be lain alongside the original text.

So I went to see NARNIA on Monday night and it wasn’t a total waste, but I sure was disapointed. I loved the books as a child and read them multiple times, but I haven’t read them in more than 20 years, so my memory of specifics is pretty vague, but the movie seemed to project a different milieu in general. The character development was great in the first half of the movie, but then everything started feeling rushed and ridiculous and by the end of the movie the cheese had weighed down the whole thing. I’m sure that the movie will be a lot of fun for 10 year olds, but I’d just rather that they read the book anyway … that way they could as least imagine that there was blood involved when Peter ran the wolf through with his sword.

Erik was trying to explain how this movie was just thinly veiled allegory. If so, then most of the symbolism went over my head. For me it was a fun bit of fantasy, if a touch too childish for my taste at times. But I can safely say that I think I am in love with the White Witch. How can you not fall for someone so cold and evil and skilled with a sword?

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Hi, I’m a Christian allegory wrapped in cheesy music and bad acting. Wait, be positive, be positive, be positive. I did like the little jazzy tune when they were playing hide-and-seek. And I did get a little giggle every time the White Witch turned someone into stone. Hm… I don’t remember being in a movie when I wanted the bad guys to win more. Yes, if I were stuck in Narnia and I had to face all those happy-go-lucky gaze-into-the-distance-meaningfully-and-dream-about-being-a-prince dorks I’d build an ice castle and snap at everyone all the time too. I guess I was asking for it though…

We went to it this weekend and I enjoyed it. It was about 2 1/2 hours long, but I didn’t realize how long it was until we got out of the theatre.

This is probably one of the best movies that I’ve seen in a long time… I know that it was probably shortened and changed a lot, but it didn’t feel like it skipped around like the 4th Harry Potter movie. Yes, I understand it’s probably very difficult to get a very large book to fit into under 3 hours. Anyway, I highly recommend this, and I’ll most likely go see it again.

Wonderful adaptation of the book. Yes, changes were made, but it makes the story a stronger movie. I can’t wait to see it again!
