So far, this movie is such a vast improvement upon the terrible book. It’s not that they’ve changed much, but the text was intolerable.

If I’d seen it on its own, I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it at all. This is not the kind of movie I would see in theatres.

But anyway, if someone recommends this to you, stick to the video, not the book.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This film really wasn’t what I expected at all; so much so, that my first viewing attempt ended right after the opening drunken sex in a toilet cubicle scene – it’s not exactly a comedy!

I’m not entirely sure where to peg this film, apart from chick flick, relationship movie. Perhaps you need to have a sister to really ‘get’ it. As it was, I didn’t really like either character too much: Cameron Diaz was vilely irresponsible, Toni Collette too much of a doormat. And the story didn’t stray far from ‘families are awful, but you need them’ – something to which I do not subscribe.

Still. Shirley McLaine is always fab, and while the movie wasn’t my cup of tea, it was pretty well done and did keep me watching right til the soppy end. Superb poetry, too.

The movie was okay, but it wasn’t exactly memorable. I rented it after reading Jenn’s “Good in Bed” that I’d picked up at the airport and devoured in a few hours. To me, this movie was equivalent to Stephen King’s first novels made into movies. It lacked a certain chutzpah that makes Jenn’s writing so engaging as the first movies based on King’s novels lacked. For example: Cujo as a book rocked. But the movie SUCKED because you just had to be in Cujo’s head to really appreciate what was transpiring. When King became directly involved in the movies, they worked. I know Jenn was involved to a degree in the production of this movie but got the gist it wasn’t a hands-on experience and being that it was her first, I’m certain she was too giddy with the whole idea to really feast upon it and mold it into what she saw in her head when writing it. I’d recommend reading Jennifer Weiner’s novels instead.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie will probably really resound with you. I wasn’t expecting much, but I ended up loving it. In fact I really want to get my sister a copy. It really “gets” the sister relationship and Toni Colette and Cameron Diz are great. Highly recommended!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I thought this was a well done and fun little Hollywood flick. It won’t change your life, but it’s enjoyable. Cameron Diaz did a pretty good job, though she is used as eye candy throughout the film. Toni Collette was also great and it was neat to see Shirley MacLaine in a subtle role like this one.

I also enjoyed the three featurettes in the special features section of the DVD. I especially liked the one about how they chose and trained the dog, and wanted to promote people getting their dogs from shelters, even though it made me feel guilty for paying a lot of money for a purebred pug. Especially interesting since the original novel and screenplay featured a pug. :) I think the dog in the mo vie was part pug and I want to know the mix. It was very cute.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m not a big Diaz fan, but I will watch anything with Toni Collette in it (she’s just fabulous). Surprisingly, I thought Cameron Diaz did a great job in this. It was a sweet movie about two sisters who just don’t seem to ‘connect’, even though they both desparately want to. It was also great to see Mark Feuerstein (I’ve had a wee crush on him for years). I’m confused as to why Anson Mount is billed above Toni, though, as he was just a guy barely seen in the beginning of the movie. Overall, its a nice movie that I’ll definitely watch again.
