This BBC adaptation is, with good reason, beloved by many austenites and the main reason why Colin Firth is on the map as an actor. Whilst I actually prefer the 2005 movie for a variety of reasons, there is no denying that this version is very good. Darcy is dreamy, first and foremost, but also, it’s an excellent adaptation of the novel. Everything is in there almost word for word – which is a good thing, of course, but it does make a rather long “movie”, since it’s supposed to be a serie. As a movie, it suffers from some dull longish moments, but if you watch it one episode at a time (as it was after all meant to be) I think you enjoy it more.
This 10th anniversary edition is interesting, although it could have been better. It certainly looks great and the book is pretty interesting, but a certain restoration of the picture quality would have been much appreciated. Some scenes, especially at the end of each episode, looked rather dreadful, which was pretty sad. Also, more extras would have been welcome – the looking back piece was nice, and the biography too (though really, such close-ups weren’t needed!), but the “walk around with Mary and Wickham”, bah, what a bore! I mean, they are certainly interesting people but what about actually asking them to talk about some facts related to the serie rather then leaving them to advertise themselves as free for any work that might come their way? It made me a bit sad actually.
But all in all, since this costs little more than 10$ over the “normal version”, I’d say go with this one all the way. That way we’ll know you’re a true fan ;)
