WORTH CONSUMING!

Set against the advent of WWII in Italy, this charming romantic tale takes place at a lakeside resort, where flirtation, desire, and longing intersect British civility and propriety. Could have been a Jane Austen story. Vanessa Redgrave is a total charmer as an aging spinstress who has lost her father recently, returning to the lake for a month to relax as she did during 16 years of vacations as a youth. She meets a British businessman (retired military man) played quite properly by Edward Fox. Beating him at tennis does not help her cause (she loves the shape of his ears), but a bored nanny (Uma Thurman) provides a little feminine competition and the plot roles forward as we ask, “Will they or won’t they ever kiss?” Okay, so it’s not an earthshaker or a message movie… but it is well acted and fun to watch.
