The Skin Gods by Richard Montanari — 3 years ago
The audio version of this book is read by Scott Brick, who actually is pretty prolific in the audiobooks industry. The setting is Philadelphia amongst the crime unit of the police department and the shady world of the porn industry. There are a couple of different stories going on, Kevin Bryne, a homicide detective and his relationships with his daughter and a woman he once helped, his partner, Jessica Balzano, a detective who’s marriage is being tested and is reassessing her role as detective, mother, wife and woman.
The detectives are faced with trying to find a “madman, dubbed the Actor.” I really enjoyed the fact that Montanari weaves cinema into this novel of suspense. He refers to murder scenes in various films, like “Psycho,” that the Actor recreates. The references to film as well as other things is pop culture makes it worth the listen or read.
I enjoyed that fact that the women in this novel are very strong and resilient even though they have faced many tragedies, like the loss of a daughter, kidnapping, attacks and dangers of their careers. The women are the victims but they are also some of the heros. Maybe he did that to balance it out…well, from my end, it was much appreciated.
So, if you are looking for a suspense novel, this is one to consider.
