French grad students are funny! The lead could’ve been picked better. As he is – uncharismatic and stiff, …not to mention his indiscretion with, oh. That would be telling. Fans of Amelie will stumble into this “foreign film” gem in the Non-English section of the corner video store and think exactly what yt did. Amelie! Awww.

But will be disappointed. Quirky EU characters aside – a lesbian Belgian? (Excellent!) L’auberge espagnole is dull and choppy. Go read a book instead.

This is a great movie! It has some drama going on and is funny in places. About friendship and starting out in life. Definitely leaves you feeling positive. Makes me want to get on a plane and travel . . .

I happened upon this movie by complete chance. After flipping through channels I stopped upon this film showing on IFC and completely fell in love with it. I don’t really know what it is about this film that I liked so much, but it’s definitely one I’d want to watch again and again. Reminds me a lot of The Science of Sleep and The Rules of Attraction for some reason.

One thing I have to say though: who the hell did the box art for the Region 1 release? The film’s star is not Audrey Tautou, who actually has a pretty small, almost secondary role. Not to mention they make the movie sound like some sort of wacky teen comedy a la Eurotrip or something. Such injustice considering how good of a film this really is.

It was especially fun seeing this after just having spent time in Barcelona. It was great to see many of the places I had seen again :)

Of course it’s also simply a good movie, rather unusual with fun actors.

Gotta see it again soon, I think.
