WORTH CONSUMING!

When this movie came out, Heath Ledger found himself starring in both this film and Brokeback Mountain. Despite how poorly the reviews for Grimm were- I’d rather see it over that other film anyday.

There are very big liberties taken with this film and the real Grimm Brothers. However, it was a lot of fun, filled with dozens of Fairy Tale Easter Eggs.

It’s distinctly a Terry Gilliam film in terms of costume, set, and casting. The only thing that would have made this film better was if someone other than Matt Damon starred opposite of Ledger. (I heard that producers passed over Johnny Depp, who went on to do Pirates of the Carribean. Oh well- their losses)

WORTH CONSUMING!

…but I quite liked it. I think it was advertised badly so people were expecting a nice action/adventure tale. Which it was, only directed by Terry Gilliam. One word: Brazil. Gilliam makes weird, twisted movies that are visually artsy and way the heck out there. So try to keep an open mind, or just don’t watch it.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

What a phenomenally awful movie. There were all these things that really seemed to have nothing to do with the plot, and so by the time it finally started moving along… it was over.

Many flaws, mainly character development, but definately worth consuming once. Just for the set design if nothing else.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I just rewatched it on TV with my little brother, but when I first saw it on the movies I got really impressed by the visual.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I know this got absolutely slated from a lot of corners, but I personally thought it was a lot of fun. Creepy trees, nasty spiders, and an evil queen all show a pair of con-artists that some fairy tales aren’t make believe!

Could have been better, of course, but it had enough moments to keep me watching.

more Bellucci, less Pryce, please — 5 years ago

There were some good moments and good ideas in this film, but overall it was a fiasco. i really loved the work Peter Stormare did in Prison Break but he was totally over the top here. The entire storyline with him and Pryce was totally unnecessary, distracting, and disgusting. i wanted more backstory on the Queen and more love between the brothers and more of the references to fairy tales and more of Angelika’s family. This ended up being seriously befuddled and only a little interesting and redeeming.

I watched it on Halloween night and had to keep pausing to deal with the trick-or-treaters coming to the door. Maybe because it fit the holiday, or maybe because I’m a sword and sorcery fan, I liked this in spite of the flaws others have pointed out. I certainly enjoyed it more than the recent Tales of Narnia movie. The special effects are very kewl, amd I thought Heath Ledger pulled off a great acting job as younger brother Jacob Grimm opposite Matt Damon’s portrayal of Will. This film may not be up to director Terry Gilliam’s best efforts (12 Monkeys, Monty Python and the Holy Grail), but it is certainly worth the rental fee.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Okay, I fell asleep a half hour before the end of the movie, so this isn’t an accurate rating. But it didn’t hold my attention enough to keep me awake, and the humor was funny, but hard to catch in the movie. I didn’t know much about it going in and I was confused. It was fun to see Matt Damon in that role, though.

WORTH CONSUMING!

There are many things that bothered me about this movie, but at the same time there was an amazing weave of old lore storys that made their way in—in imaginative ways.

The issues that come to this film are mostly character development and non-understanding of motivations. Damon is obviously developmentally delayed but they don’t say as much, strange characters like the italian with no reconcilliation. Some very odd, sometimes painful moments. However, as a rental, it’s fine.

Watch it be, irked, and be amazed at some pieces. ;-)
