I listened to the audio version of this. I bought it for my sister, Clare, who liked it just fine, but said that she preferred “Wrinkle in Time” (which I’d also bought her). I see her point. There’s nothing really wrong with it, although it is occasionally a little obvious and slow getting to the point. I get that it’s a kid’s story, I really do, but felt like Hiaasen condenscends to his readers occasionally, and it was no surprise to me that it flopped as a movie. I know that it received excellent reviews, but these were given by adults who were no doubt attracted to the environmental story (and that’s worthwhile, but I’m sure it could have been a excecuted a little more cleanly).
