Diana Krall sounds tired on Quiet Nights. The hugely orchestrated arrangements overpower her hushed, sultry vocals. Some tracks soar despite the dominant string section. Krall turns “Walk On By” into a bossa nova classic, and her piano commands the melody of “So Nice.” Krall’s version of “You’re My Thrill” doesn’t quite compare to Peggy Lee’s from Black Coffee, but listeners will be pleasantly surprised by her rendition of the Bee Gees’ “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.” The album fails to deliver anything remarkably new, but it has a cohesive, sensual vibe that’s ideal for an early spring album.
