Disturbing and hard on the brain... — 3 years ago
This book was a mindfuck start to finish and I’m not 100% sure that I liked it or what…
In any case, it’s set in a small town in Ireland in the 70s and 80s and contains a fair amount of violence, as would might expect, as well as a good chunk of insanity.
It’s incredibly disturbing in parts, fairly amusing in others. I couldn’t read it at bedtime. It turns around in narrative circles, leaping from one decade to the next. The imagination of the narrator is diseased. He’s reliably unreliable, but aware of his own unreliability. It doesn’t end well.
I found myself quite deeply involved with it for some sections, and nearly skimming other sections. I don’t know what that says about the writing, though it’s definitely interesting.
I really don’t know how I feel about this book. I hope it will get out of my head soon.
