Technofantastic — 1 year ago
This was an interesting story, with a great setting, an unusual narrator, and a plot that meandered through various twists and turns. I often was not exactly sure where the story was going, which led to unforeseen surprises but also a bit of a detachment from the proceedings. The setting and themes of the Bull’s novel were the most interesting to me. The postapocalyptic City (Minneapolis after a nuclear war) was still a recognizable location while being very different from today and populated by many cool people and things; not as grim as other “end of the world” tales, this place is still habitable and is all the better for it. Also, Bull mixes fantasy and noir elements with her sci-fi, a blend of magic and technology that I always find appealing. On the other hand, the Horsemen plot and some of the voodoo elements led to some “deus ex machina” seeming points and the ending in particular seemed quite sudden, almost rushed. Sparrow, as a unique unreliable narrator, helped in making this easier to understand. While not as engrossing to me as “War for the Oaks,” Bull’s “technofantasy” was thoroughly enjoyable.
