Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming this — 18 weeks ago

This one, I’m not sure I’m going to finish, it’s that annoying. Turning Elizabeth Bennett from a witty, cultivated, original heroine into a bloodthirsty thug doesn’t even work as a joke, which this book clearly wants to be, and could be in subtler hands. I’ll give it another chance or two as the situation warrants, but there’s a lot on my to-be-read pile I’m eager to get to.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This book was a disappointment. It’s a very good idea, but the author didn’t do that much with it. I felt like he was making fun of the characters and the book in general. There were several crude parts that were so stupid I felt like rolling my eyes. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies wasn’t engaging, entertaining, or even that funny. Either the author was being very lazy, or he just didn’t understand Pride and Prejudice. I hope the movie, if it’s still being made, will be a lot better.

WORTH CONSUMING!

An entertaining read, but not compelling. First off, I should let you know that if you’re just here for the zombie-killing action, you might as well leave now – the zombies are like icing on a Pride and Prejudice cake, not the main event.
I don’t think the story suffered particularly from the zombies, and there were some funny scenes relating thereto. Unlike the time I tried to read P&P, I was able to get through the book, but that may be more to do with the fact that I’ve since seen the BBC miniseries, the Keira Knightley movie, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Bride & Prejudice, so I was able to keep all the Bennet sisters straight.
One thing I didn’t care for was the dehumanization of Elizabeth – being a well-trained zombie-killing machine is one thing, but I found the inner monologue where she’s relishing the idea of drinking blood from her just-slain enemy’s head to be a little over-the-top. I found it made her character less sympathetic.
