Right now, this book feels very strange. The books I’ve been reading recently have been the kind that grab you and drag you through from cover to cover and barely let you take a breath in the middle. This isn’t one of those. It’s much slower reading; you have to read every word carefully becaues Rushdie will change the meaning of a whole sentence with one little unexpected adjective that, if you were reading too quickly, you could skim over and never know what you missed. The story is told in segments; each character is given a chapter in which his or her own personal part of the story is fleshed out. I’m intrigued to see where this goes now that I’ve gotten into it. It’s definitely worth taking the time to get into, anyway.
