At The Death House Door — 3 years ago
Really amazing, especially the story of Carlos Hernandez and Carlos De Luna, and the experiences of this jailhouse minister.
(Illustrates why we need the option of Life Without Parole in Texas — because it’s the kind of sentence that can be reversed in the case of wrongful conviction!)
Fascinating opportunity to consider why the death penalty does not actually serve as a deterrent in Texas. Suggested (to me) that many of our present inmates are related to persons previously executed by the state, and that executing people has the result of de-valuing life (and the taking of life), to the point that these friends/family members are less able to see taking a life as a big deal. So instead of serving as a deterrent, it actually seems to have the opposite effect. Is it a method of coping with a force that has done little to serve or protect your own people?
Highly recommended.
