WORTH CONSUMING!

This is possibly the most beautiful book I’ve ever read. It’s also the most heartbreaking and well-written book I’ve ever read.

I realize the back cover doesn’t really say much but saying any more about the plot would kind of ruin it. The beauty of this book and the writing is the way it all unravels little by little as you keep reading. And that’s one of the reason you keep turning the pages, the suspense and the mystery of it all. And when we do find out the answer, Ishiguro doesn’t hit you over the head with a sledgehammer and go “Ta-Dah! Isn’t this a crazy and unexpected revelation?!” but instead it’s just a part of the reality of the characters, it’s something they’ve always known or had been kind of expecting. (And if you didn’t get as caught up and immersed in this world unlike me, you’d probably pick up on the hints and figure out some things that I didn’t.)
It’s all so very subtle and scary and sad.

Ishiguro is a literary genius and the way he weaves this story with his brilliant and simple writing and language will suck you in and stay with you eons after you’ve read it. It’s so human. It’s hauntingly beautiful (I know I’m quoting Drunk!Ted but that’s the perfect description of this book).
I highly recommend it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Science fiction that reads like literature is always a rare find. Never Let Me Go is an excellent example of a novel that will satisfy both science fiction and contemporary literature fans.

The premise of this novel is simple, albeit slowly revealed as the story progresses, so I won’t spoil it. Ishiguro is playing with so many big ideas in this novel, but as I read it, I didn’t fully realize what was really being explored, because I was so caught up in the narrative of the main character’s (Kathy H.) childhood and adolescence. I only gradually came to ponder the underlying issues. Why do we accept without questioning our destinies as they have been told to us? What is it about human nature that needs the Other, something different to hate and discriminate against? At what point do we trade in our humanity?

Beyond the story, the characters are what make this novel so affecting. The voice of the narrator is so fully realized that I could literally hear her speaking in my head, down to accent and intonations, as I read. This book was so beautiful and haunting it will resonate with me for a long time.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book really struck a chord with me. It explores the moral implications of breeding clones for human organ transplants. Think the movie The Island, with way less product placement and explosions. I think the author did a beautiful job of showing the fear and minor rebellious nature of the characters in the beginning and middle, and the quiet resolution at the end. I highly recommend this book.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Disarmingly simple and direct prose; very tight plotting; and a deeply human story.

A brilliantly executed book… the work of a master craftsman in full flight!

Lovely writing, uncertain about the story — 3 years ago

This is a well-written piece that is either an alternative reality or a future piece, I never decided which. It’s set in the UK and I can’t say much more because part of the interest in the story is figuring it out as it slowly unfolds. It’s an interesting and different tale, though not fast paced or terribly eventful. The ending left me wishing for more, but it’s probably still a worthwhile read. Now I’m on to less worthy, but more engrossing, reading. ;)

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the first of Ishiguro that I’ve read and I’m just stunned at what a masterful writer he is.

This is a very deliberate novel. There isn’t an ounce of extraneous language contained within its pages. Every word, every sentence is tight and clean. Every scene builds up to the next. Having read so much sloppy contemporary fiction, it was SO refreshing to read a tale spun by someone who knows how to use language and structure to his advantage.

A great read. Interesting subject matter. Highly recommended.

Ishiguro cum Atwood??! — 3 years ago

I thought that this was a fairly well-written book, but it’s not Ishiguro. The reasons I love Ishiguro’s writing: poetic prose, almost ephemeral storylines of self-realization, cultural revelations…. none of these are present. It’s almost like a 360 in terms of approach- very concrete, science-fiction-ey type story line, in very straight-forward language.

It was quite disconcerting.

Also, having just watched The Island the night before, it felt madly redundant. Bad timing on my part.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I think I liked it most as I didnt know anything about it when I first picked it up and it reveals itself slowly.

I’ve never read any of his other stuff, in fact I didnt know it was the same author as Remains of the Day. That might have turned me off, as I saw the movie and absolutely hated it. Now I’m thinking I should try the book after enjoying this one so much.

Really original! Try it out!

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I had high hopes for this book but it ended up disappointing me. Although it was well written, the plot was somewhat all over the place and Ishiguro didn’t seem to have a common thread tying it back together. I felt he could’ve gone into depth about more of the storyline but some part of it always felt somewhat surface. The idea is original but, like i said earlier, it could’ve gone more into depth.
