I wasn’t impressed. I went in knowing about Great Balls of Fire and the cousin thing, and left with the same info. The movie was a lot more about Jerry Lee Lewis’ marriage to his 13-year old cousin than the music, which felt wrong. On both counts: there was something entirely creepy about watching what surely amounts to child abuse – and that it was made to seem almost okay (“Oh, girls get married at 10 back home”, how much he loved her, etc) didn’t help in the slightest.
It was also pretty slow, building up to a quick flick through latter-day dramas. Plus, I just didn’t like Dennis Quaid – usually very watchable, imo – here: the accent was terrible, he did not look good blond, and that he was almost 30 seducing a 17-year-old Winona Ryder brought that creepy factor into the real world, too.
