This is the classic novel of survival after nuclear war, written at the height of the Cold War. While the book may seem a little dated and naive to us now – the calamitous effects of all-out nuclear war on the environment were not as well known at the time of the book’s writing – its depiction of survival, the rebuilding of an enclosed society with its own rules and traditions, and the hope of mankind in the face of near-total devastation is still a universal and powerfully moving story.
