Companion piece — 5 weeks ago

Read the manga.

I can really only recommend this as a somewhat interesting companion piece if you’re bored and liked the manga.

It’s not bad. It’s well cast, well directed, etc. But there’s no room for the individual backstories that really made the manga gripping. Minor characters are no longer memorable thanks to strange quirks or motives, and major characters are reduced to one dimension. (Mitzu with no background? Tremendous waste.)

WORTH CONSUMING!

good premise, but only in the sense of what it allows the movie to do: make japanese schoolchildren kill each other. brutally.
its actually explained very badly. so its the future, unemployment’s pretty high, about a million kids stop going to school, so the solution is to randomly pick a 9th grade class and force them to kill each other on a remote island. oh yeah, and the kids had no idea what was going on, never heard of BR. wtf.
but im being nitpicky. this movie is totally worth watching, there’s so many fantastic scenes, its just bookended rather poorly. the beginning and ending were my least favorite parts. everything else was freakin spectacular.

What this movie is... — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

...is a Japanese Paul Verhoeven movie. It’s got exactly the same kind of outrageous, over-the-top satire that you see in “Starship Troopers”, not to mention the same appalling ultraviolence. In both cases you have ideas about violence and retribution pushed as far as the filmmaker can go (and as far as the audience can handle it, and maybe even past that).

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Did someone say weeaboo?

I like the plot of the story. There’s not really much suspense or anything you can’t predict, no jump-at-you cheap scares, meh. It doesn’t develop into anything at all, it seemed to have tried. I would recommend this movie to young teenagers or people who enjoy Japanese things.

High school kids being forced to kill one another.
What’s there not to like about that?
