A review of this — 5 years ago

I am under the impression that Diner is something of a cult classic. There are certainly some memorable quotes and funny little scenes (for example, the scene in the TV showroom).

However, the overall movie I find kind of depressing. How old are these kids supposed to be? In their twenties? They are getting married, they’re going to have kids, raise families. None of them are mature, and they seem to have little if any self-knowledge. They are like 12 year-olds walking around in the bodies of 20 year-olds. I suppose part of that may be the “point” of the movie – that back in the fifties, a select group of people didn’t have to be in touch with reality, or even with themselves. They just sort of drifted along in a juvenile state until they were forced into adult roles which they couldn’t handle.

Maybe I’m missing something, but that’s what I got from the movie.
