Curmudgeon in nature, badly written and slightly interesting — 3 years ago
A very can-I-have-some-more-soup,-Sir?-styled story about a Swedish drug-addict who left for Bolivia to smuggle drugs to pay off a debt to his dealers. Needless to say, he was caught trying to leave the country, and hence was thrown in jail. The story is told by a journalist who seems hell-bent to get paid by the number of words he produces, and hence a lot – mainly the second half of the book – is worthless. Concatenate, god damn it, and this tome would have been valuable. I like some parts of it, but mostly not. It’s the subject feeling sorry for himself, and at times some really interesting cultural bits about life in a highly dangerous part of life as well as a Bolivian prison where few things can be taken for granted, but all in all, the story could be told in 100 pages and not 400. Dreary.
