I’d read good things about Spin and decided to pick it up, even though I’d never heard of Robert Charles Wilson. It was fabulous. Enough character development to keep me interested, as well as some genuinely top-notch science fiction writing, as in “Pick a funny speculative science thing. Work within the framework you’ve established, and see how people react.”

There’s a little bit of action, some love, and no needlessly explicit poorly-done sex scenes. Oh, and twice I was genuinely surprised by a plot twist. Twice!
