Another one where I really don’t understand why so many people seem so down on this. Okay, it’s not Lord of the Rings, if that’s what people were expecting from Peter Jackson (although that’s backwards chronology), but it’s a heck of a lot better than King Kong! I did read that one of the problems straight out for this was the scheduling: instead of being released for Halloween, as planned, the studio moved it to a summer slot. Big mistake! Advertising also didn’t help.
But, ‘cover-judging’ aside, I think this is actually quite a good little movie. Michael J Fox plays a ‘con man’ psychic with a twist – he actually can see the dead, although the hauntings he fixes are actually being carried out by his friends. However, more trouble than being called a fraud is in store, as the Grim Reaper himself seems to be on the loose…
The only downside is perhaps a slightly mixed tone: the humour can make for a slightly younger-feeling audience, but the whole piece is a lot darker and scarier than you first think, going in. I personally thought the friendly spooks could have been written a bit better, but the Reaper was great.
