I’m somewhat undecided about this film. On the one hand, it seems to try taking a slightly more intellectual approach to explaining how these individuals came to possess superpowers, and why their arch-nemisis hates them so. Which is fine – I quite enjoyed the explanation and it avoided the trap of many similar films of rushing through said explaination to get to the action.
Ah. On the other hand… There is a reason most superhero films fall into the same pattern – we want action! And it’s here that TFF falls down: science and explanation fill 90% of the film, leaving about 2 big action sequences. How disappointing!
I realise my pros and cons contradict each other, but I suspect the film makers were hoping for more success to build a francise – as an opener, this is pretty good. As a stand alone, it’s a bit lacking in plot beyond the basic introduction stuff.
edit: IMDb informs me that there is a sequel being filmed! Well – I for one will be glad of another chance to ogle Chris Evans! fellow Brits will understand just how odd it feels to write that sentence
