Intriguing, archetypical and fairly complex — 44 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

So far, I’ve only seen the first season. Although fairly archetypical with the larger-than-life psychologist/criminal profiler Anthony Hill playing the man to Detective Inspector Carol Jordan, the two crack cases often involving semi-complex plots spanning two TV-episodes. Filled with smart twists and turns, good photography and well-paced direction and scripting, I can firmly recommend this to those who like crime and TV that doesn’t treat the viewer like an idiot.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Based on the books by Val McDermid, this series really appealed to me in a way that most crime/thriller drama doesn’t quite manage. I’ve never been a fan of Robson Green, but I think his character and performance here really makes the series – no longer a ‘heart throb’, older and more than a little strange; the psychologist who seems more in need of receiving treatment than giving it!

There have been several series now, short runs of 90-minute contained storylines for the most part. The latest run saw the departure of Carol Jordon, psychologist Tony Hill’s police contact and almost-love interest. I had my doubts, but it was refreshing to lose the ‘will they/won’t they’ in favour of a new cop and new distrust.

The crimes are always brutal, twisted, but I think handled with relative decorum – more is suggested than actually seen, I feel. There is never certainty that the ‘hero’ will get his profile right, or has done in the past, or indeed will keep a grasp on his own sanity in the process!

Worth a look, definitely.
