Wouldn’t personally recommend this. Getting the most out of Public Enemies needs cerebral audience involvement. It’s not fast-paced, so it needs to be pulled by character development and storyline. There’s an old docu feel but modern cinematography – the shakiness can make some nauseated – wouldn’t recommend to an actionseeker. Many close-up shots so sit further from the screen. Gunfire lighting and nostalgic sound feels authentic, but that’s always a side thrill. Low wattage Depp still intense.

I found the cinematography a little jarring. The choices of hand held and video caused a lot of visual noise and made the film feel candid which I think really clashed with using big stars in it. At times it felt like I was watching Johnny Depp and Christian Bale play with guns. They also stood out because they were so good looking compared to the rest of the cast.
There were a lot of things I didn’t really like about the movie – cheesey dialog, epic musical scores which also clashed with the aesthetic and marion cotillard’s accents was all over the place (sometimes that worked sometimes it didn’t).
Regardless of it flaws I did get really wrapped up in it towards the end of the flick and I was conflicted. I wanted Dillinger to get away but I also wanted the movie to end.
