A story about this — 2 years ago
Don’t look for closure in this documentary-style glimpse into the wannabe-an-actress life of Ellie Parker (Naomi Watts). Shot in digital video instead of on film, it looks and feels like a really good home movie instead of a for-the-big-screen drama. And like reality, it does not begin or end, it simply persists.
Ellie’s life is a mess, running from audition to audition to a soak in the tub with a joint hanging out of her mouth to the arms of her cheating wannabe-guitarist boyfriend. A chance encounter with a wannabe-photographer leads to the possibility of some romance, but the guy turns out to be more into guys than gals. Her kinda-competitive relationship with her best friend and fellow Aussie import looks like it could turn into a girl-gets-girl ending, but doesn’t quite go there. And don’t look for help from Ellie’s agent (Chevy Chase). The final call-back he sends her to in a hotel room with tripped out producers is surreal in the exteme. Makes you wonder how/why anyone would ever want to play the Hollywood game.
Ellie Parker showed at Sundance (yawn). Ebert and Roeper gave it two thumbs up (slow week?). I was unimpressed. If you miss this, no shame. If you see it, little gain.
