I just didn’t think it was possible for someone to use words like bombazine and tarlatan, panoply and balustrade and not come off sounding like you were a pompous ass. Colin Meloy proves it can be done with astounding clarity. I often find myself googling historical facts, famous names of far of cities and uncommon words just to figure out the full meaning of his elaborate tales. I learn from Mr. Meloys music. Although The Decemberists go on from this point to record albums with over reaching themes and even a rock opera that would make Pink Floyd proud. This album may be easier to enjoy because it contains songs that you can enjoy on their own merit.
