Treadwell was nuts, but what an interesting film! Werner Herzog did a great job putting the bits together and captured some truly odd and rewarding interviews (the coroner, the bush pilot). The film would have been much better minus Werner’s hamfisted narration. I think director and subject share a bit of inflated self-importance in that sense.

2)I keep trying to place him in some kind of psychological category. I thought it was interesting he was an addict. On Loveline a few weeks ago, Adam Corolla theorized that alcoholics would be some of the most productive members of society because of their drive and tolerance for risk, except that they use that drive to ruin themselves. It seems like he just replaced booze with bears. He also had some kind of martyr complex—“I teach kids for free!”—a grandiose notions about himself and what he was doing. I’m going to file him under sociopath.

3)Even crazier was that cororner. What the fuck? You probably have to be a bit nutty to have that job. Or it turns you that way. He almost seemed fake.
