The Bells is good for a silent thriller. It’s about an innkeeper who murders to pay off his debt, and how his conscience torments him for it. The best part of this DVD is the add-on surrealist short film The Crazy Ray [aka Paris Qui Dort; At 3:25], directed by Rene Clair. Everyone in Paris, except those above a certain elevation [in an airplane, atop the Eiffel Tower], is mysteriously frozen in time. The unaffected experience the living-in-a-department-store fantasy that many dream of, until, naturally, things go wrong.
