WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a film about Italian Catholics in the USA, in the 1980s. Loretta – very well played by Cher – is a down-to-earth bookkeeper, whose husband died suddenly seven years previously. She decides to accept a marriage proposal from the middle-aged Johnny, whom she likes but does not love. He hurries away to the deathbed of his mother, instructing Loretta to get in touch with his estranged brother Ronny. Loretta does just that…

It’s good fun, with some bittersweet moments, some thought-provoking scenes, and some mildly amusing, almost farcical scenes of confusion and misunderstanding. Nicely done, not too caricatured, and a good ending. Recommended.

1987… if you’re an old Italian-American woman having a walk with someone other than your husband, your even older father thinks you’re cheating. That’s the social setting of Moonstruck.

Very good performance by Cage, as usual, but the movie itself is nothing to write home about. Aside perhaps from the fact that it’s one of the very rare movies about Italian families that doesn’t involve mafia activities.
