WORTH CONSUMING!

I put off seeing this movie becuase I did not want to be disappointed, but I was wrong. it was original, creative, and showed a fresh perspective on the Willie Wonka tale. It can sit side by side with the original Gene Wilder version, as a well actedmovie, in its own right.

Just too weird for my tastes to be anything more than a watchable oddity.

I love this movie. It comes across as more faithfull to the book – especially in the images it uses, the colours, the sets. I was not a fan of the original and apparently from what Ive read Roald Dahl wasnt either. Kudos to Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.

If you don’t try to compare this with the Gene Wilder version, you’ll be ok. I never got any MJ vibes, so was ok on that point. I didn’t like the whole dentist father flashback thingy, which wasn’t part of the book and really shows. Deep Roy was great as the oompa loompas.

Johnny Depp was a little too weird.

Willy Wonka reminded me of Jacko — 4 years ago

Did anybody else think that Willy Wonka was eerily reminiscent of Michael Jackson?

It was good, I won’t compare it to the original film, I prefer to compare it to the book. It stayed mostly very faithful to the book (apart from the frequent flashbacks to his father…). I loved the oompa loopahs, the song and dance routines were just hilarious. But I think Burton went too far in trying to make them seem as small as possible – they seemed to change proportion all the time, and the bluescreening was just way too obvious (he could’ve learned some lessons from Peter Jackson, who made his normal men sized hobbits ‘work’ much better). Charlies family characters were well acted, and the horrible children were all suitably awful.

I remember little of the book itself – my English teacher read it to us when we were eight. I remember being enthralled by the fantasy element of it all. I do remember my idea of Willy Wonka didn’t really match the one in this version though. The song numbers were Bollywood-esque, but I quite enjoyed the dark humour of it all, especially the references to the 2001: The Space Odyssey and Edward Scissorhands.

Better then the original. Johnny Depp’s Wonka was a little too disconnected and over the top for me and the flashbacks were needless. The rest of the movie was miles above the original.

This movie is freakin awesome. I’d go see it again in the theaters. I liked it so much that I went and bought the original and can’t wait to buy this one! I love Johnny Depp. He is a great actor!

Johnny Depp played a hella creepy Willy Wonka. The hair, the teeth, the white skin and what looked suspiciously like lipstick … damn. I loved how shiny and candy colored the whole movie was, it had a surreal feel to it. The Oompah Loompahs were miles better than the 70s version, less stoic and more playful.

I had to push out the imagery of Johny Depp basing his character around Michael Jackson, because that’s wrong truly and utterly wrong Shudders Many parts left us grumbling hey that wasn’t in the book, was Willie Wonka that mad/eccentric, should X really happen. Overall fun, enjoyable captured the personalities of the children very well in a very Tim Burtonish manner.

Mike Teavee’s parents are frightening – I’ve been using the “mumbling!” lines on my daughter all day, much to her annoyance.

Visually this movie was amazing, and overall I guess I liked it a bit better than the original. However, I still think that Gene Wilder makes a better Willy Wonka.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really did enjoy this movie. The songs were overdone and kind of fell flat compared to the rest of the movie. The opening reminded me of a chocolate factory run by the machines from The Matrix. It was a very typical Tim Burton opening. Johnny Depp was mostly brilliant. I feel like they cut out a lot of things in the latter half of the movie to make it shorter. There’s less and less interesting detail and gags as the movie goes on, which is a shame. But really, I don’t think there’s much out right now that’s better than this. A lot of fun.

Wacky and slightly dark and sweet. Captures Roald Dahl’s sensibilities well and brings a bit of Tim Burton’s world to it too.
