Great concept. Yeah, the execution was a bit amateurish, but it’s an indie film, so I can more or less excuse certain things. What I can’t excuse is how much they dumbed the film down.
Within the first twenty minutes of the film, some ignorant white woman asks a Mexican if they’re from Guatamala or Honduras. I giggled at this because, yeah, it is pretty funny when people think all Hispanics are Mexicans.
I stopped giggling, however, when the movie paused, and a graphic appeared on the screen to tell me: “Guatemalans and Hondurans are not Mexicans.” (HAHA GET IT? IT’S FUNNY BECAUSE SHE THINKS THEY’RE THE SAME COUNTRY. BUT THEY’RE NOT. IN CASE YOU WEREN’T AWARE.)
They should have treated their audience with more respect. It also hurt my feelings to see every non-Latino in the film portrayed as culturally insensitive, incompetent, and downright racist. When you’re alienating people who are on your side, you’re doing something wrong.
