This isn’t one I’d have chosen for myself, but it was given to me as a gift by a friend of French origins, and I’ve since watched it just for the fun of it after the initial obligatory viewing.

It’s marvelously acted, and one of the few times I can honestly say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed a movie in a language I couldn’t speak at all. The subtitle translations were excellent, rhyming when they ought, which is no small feat going from one language to another.

Gérard Depardieu at his best! i’ve always thought of him as being typecast as the bumbling idiot, but Cyrano truly does have panache. This movie is funny, the translations of the poetry rhyme, and the the viewer can’t help but love and empathize with the hero. i would definitely recommend this movie even with the sad ending. Wonderful locations and costumes make the film complete.
