This was really an excellent movie. It was just as good as the first movie, though I must say I skipped part 2 because of reviews that it wasn’t very good. At least now I know why things happened the way they did in Cube.

I agree with Michiel. (below) The original Cube was innovative and thought-provoking; the sequel Hyper Cube was a typical Hollywood makeover, poor copy of the first; and this prequel Cube Zero was much more true to the original. Most of the questions raised in Cube are answered in this film. The gore here was a bit over the top, but it’s easy enough (on DVD) to fast-forward past it. I’m glad I watched Cube Zero, as it gave some nice closure to the triolgy, but I would highly recommend watching this last in the series, as it would spoil much of the mystery and suspense of the original if seen before it.

Save your time and watch the first Cube movie.

Let me first state the the first cube movie was really good for a very low-budget movie and it made ingenious use of a very limited set.
The second move then proceeded to ass-rape any part of the first movie that was good.
And now Cube Zero, a prequel. Where the first movie only alluded to a dark and sinister outfit behind the cube this latest iteration fills in almost all the blanks, something I’m sure the original maker never intended; I always had the idea he intentionally left it vague to add to the suspense.
And yet, and yet, I couldn’t help myself: I enjoyed watching this. Sure, the acting was bad, and some of the backstory decisions didn’t make any sense (ie. ‘DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD’) but on the whole I liked it.
I liked the ‘watching the watchers’ stuff, I liked the little differences in this earlier cube, and I liked the little surprise at the end. Then again, after cube 2:hypercube I wasn’t expecting much.
But please: let us stop making prequels, threequels and other quels of this and other movies, hmmm?

I loved Cube so much. It’s one of my very favorite movies. I think that’s why I watched Cube Zero even though I knew it was going to be crap. It got worse and worse as it went. It had one clever bit at the end, but the rest was pretty much Z-Movie rubbish.
