Almost everyone I know likes this movie. And a lot of people I don’t know like it as well: it’s on dozens of definitive “Best Of” lists, and Atticus Finch was voted the greatest American movie hero of all time by the AFI. (The greatest American movie villain was Hannibal Lecter, which is a battle I am absolutely DESPERATE to see.) It’s hard not to like the story of young Scout Finch, and although most people remember it for the portrayal of racism in the small-town American South, the story of Boo Radley is equally compelling. This movie’s pretty easy to review. Of course the story is heartbreaking and honest. Of course Gregory Peck is amazing. Of course I start tearing up during the courthouse scene when Reverend Sykes says “Jean Louise, stand up. Your father’s passing.” It’s a classic story, well-written and well acted, and that’s all it takes. It’s often too easy to rebel and go against the crowd when something’s widely enjoyed, but when the sacred cow is as good as To Kill A Mockingbird, I just have to break down and conform.
