Better than I thought it'd be — 4 years ago
It certainly was engaging, given the subject matter. But then, I love a movie that shows that there are all kinds of love.

I didn’t find this movie to be funny, though I did gain a better understanding of S&M, the plot held me and I didn’t think it would end nice, but it did. I’m undecided on this movie. It was a good twist to the love story and I didn’t hate it, but I don’t think I would recommend it to others. It was just weird which you’d think would be right up my ally, but yeah it just sorta bothered me in places.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie because I had never heard of it, but my friend asked if I wanted to watch it with her, she being in the same boat as me. Definitely different, and interesting, I’m still not sure of what to make of it, but I liked it! I’m sure this “review” wont be of much help to anyone, haha.
I really enjoyed this film, The fact that it was about S&M was kind of second fiddle to the story for me. Although obviously it was a major part… It really was a love story first and foremost and it was good to see 2 very credible actors throw themselves into their roles so confidently. Maggie Gyllenhall was great, a perfect choice for the role.
I love that these two people found each other, and the way in which they came together. I always wondered how you do that if you were into that kind of thing. It made it not sleazy.
Utter crap. It feels so absurdly desperate to be strange and confrontational without ever actually acheiving it. And it basically just runs the premise into the ground and then digs it up again. Little to no development of actual characters or plot. It reminded me of the those really bad SNL skits that starts off barely funny and goes on and on and never gets better. WE GET IT! lifestyle BDSM is kooky! get on with it.
I like Maggie G and James Spader and quirky movies, so this seemed like a good fit. But I really, really didn’t like it.
This quirky, sometimes hilarious film could have fallen flat on its face but it doesn’t thanks to a superb central performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal who playfully pulls you in.
I had heard very little about this movie when I finally got around to renting it. By the time I was 15 minutes in, I knew it was going to be one of my all time favorites. And I was right.
Not just some S&M movie, it’s more of a brilliant love story with a top/bottom twist. I’m rather fond of this movie, too. :)
