David Milch is a creative genius. This series is the best “Western” drama I’ve seen in many, many years. I can’t wait to start season two. Just put in my request through the local library.

It took me a few episodes to get drawn into this series. Initially I found the characters a bit one-dimensional. I suppose this is a problem with most series.
Deadwood has some inherent limitations, given its setting – a time when women were chattel, a place where there’s no law, only control by some sociopathic individuals, and horrible acts of violence occur on a daily basis. We’re not going to see inspiring portraits of the human spirit. I’ve continued to find it a little difficult to become engaged by the characters because their experience of humanity is quite different from mine.
Despite all that, I like the attempts at depicting history realistically – based on the interviews from disc 6, you’d say they’ve got some historians helping them out. The acting and writing are excellent. At times I have the feeling that I’m viewing a Greek play dressed up as a western.
The one problem with watching this series is all the obscenity – it starts to invade your own speech. I’m not sure if there’s an antidote to that.
can’t wait for second season. so gritty, very original characetrs, like that there’s no clear-cut duality between good and evil. And I don’t usually like westerns, but am so glad I started to watch this.
LOVED it! Funny, brash, foul-mouthed. I can’t wait for the second season!
