WORTH CONSUMING!

Okay, this is one of the most highly-regarded books in recent Western literature, so it’s no big surprise that I liked it.

Lee has a really nice voice for this book, and she’s able to tell the story from the point of view of future (presumably adult) Scout without messing up the tenses, like I find didn’t happen in Lullabies for Little Criminals.

A good part of the book is slow – very slow, but never boring – layering on the atmosphere of Maycomb, and gradually teaching us about Scout and Atticus and the townsfolk. And even though I’d read the book once before, half my life ago, and there were no real surprises, I did still get a little frisson when Scout was surprised by events. This is a classic for a reason. If you haven’t read it, do.

An absolute classic—meaningful story told in a clear, concise fashion
