A Little Annoying, But Still Loved It — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I never went to see Kenny. It was a horrible, gut wrenching weekend, so I didn’t have the energy to meet a bunch of strangers to watch a movie. Introverted, I know. Instead, I took out my Sex and the City DVD collection and began watching the show from the first season. Being a fan, like almost every woman out there, I trekked to the movie theater with my best friend Laura when the movie came out. After the movie, I found no flaws, but Laura was infuriated with the Carrie storyline. I kind of understood why, but now I REALLY understand. I will talk about each character’s storyline, from favorite to least favorite, which are as follows:

1. Miranda
2. Charlotte
3. Samantha
4. Carrie

Miranda – This was my favorite storyline. I might be bias because I see myself a lot in the Miranda character, and she is my absolute favorite. However, I don’t really think that is the entire reason why. In the show, we saw Miranda evolve from a cynical, selfish, career-driven Manhattanite to a compromising, loving mother and wife living in Brooklyn.
In the movie, we see that Miranda’s and Steve’s marriage has gotten stale and Miranda’s focus is Brady and her career. Due to this strain, Steven cheats, which he guiltily confesses to Miranda. After this confession, Miranda moves out with Brady. This was the most powerful storyline. Cynthia Dixon does an amazing job, even better than in the show in making Miranda a 3-dimensional character. She exposes every emotion, and there was not a time I didn’t’ believe her. Her story overshadowed the other three stories. I felt she even got more screen time. In addition, Cynthia Dixon looked really good. I was shocked don how good she looked. While the other characters looked like they had aged, she was the only one who looked like she was still the same age from where the show left off.

Charlotte – As always, Charlotte was funny, class, and cute without trying. She didn’t have much of a plot compared to the other three, but Davis’ facial expressions and way of delivering her lines made her my second favorite anyway. Her life wasn’t jolted with any chaos, like the other three, but I was glad she didn’t. In the show, I felt that Charlotte had the most struggles and havoc (being infertile, divorce, etc), so it was refreshing for her to get everything that she wanted. The way that she yelled at Big after his 100th diss to Carrie was sad, but she was always optimistic, and I felt that he took some of that way from her, even if it was temporary. Even if he story wasn’t as complex as the others were, Davis’ acting made me not notice that fact.

Samantha – I felt it was kind of out of character that Samantha would leave NYC to be fully invested in Smith’s life. I know that was mainly what her plot was about, but I think they could have come with a more realistic one. They could have stayed in NYC. I did cry at the end of her story (don’t want to reveal any spoilers), but I was still disappointed in the way they portrayed Samantha. What was the best about her character? Her experiences with multiple men, and how she reacted to the. Missing in the movie. I was happy to see Samantha, but the excitement that comes with her character was lacking.

Carrie – I remember when the show ended, there were mixed reviews on her ending up with Big. At first, I found no flaws with it, until now. I am annoyed with her storyline. After rewatching all the show episodes, Big really did a number on Carrie. The ultimate is leaving her at the altar, in the beginning of the movie. Yes, he had a change of heart and was returning, but it was too late. It’s like they said on the L Word when Shane left Carmen at the altar, and tried to get her back. Leaving someone at the altar is unforgivable. Some will say Carrie was an idiot when it came to Big, so it was in her character. But who cares?! Being that Sex and the City influences so many women, I would have thought the writers would try to make a statement. Majority of women have dealt with a Big. I know I have. What really happens? You don’t end up with Big. It is rare that happens. If she had to end up with someone, bring Aidan, or someone like Aidan, back. Maybe Aidan got divorced, and Carrie being older and wiser doesn’t mess it up this time. Or maybe have her end up alone. I think it was a sad statement to make.

Overall, the movie was a wonderful gift to all those Sex and the City fans. I can overlook some of the irritation of the storylines, and I am glad I saw my favorite women.

WORTH CONSUMING!

There are spoilers, my dears so if you wish to be spoiler-free move along!

What a fabulous movie! I think that was probably the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. After watching the series over and over again for the past five years it was like nothing changed between the TV show and movie. It did a great job of making you feel like they picked up right after where they left it.

The beginning of the movie had a montage of classic scenes describing the series in a nutshell. When touching on Charlotte they included my favorite line of hers, “I’ve been dating since I was 15! I’m exhausted! Where is he?” And of course they included an outrageous line from Samantha, “I’m dating this guy with the funkiest tasting spunk!” However, Joshua and I turned to each wondering, “Do any of these people even know which episodes these are from?” Yeah, we’re a bit snub about it, merely because I’ve watched every single episode numerous times. ;P

Big looked handsome as ever. The Penthouse on 5th was absolutely gorgeous, and the closet Big ended up building for Carrie made me green with envy! I would have loved to have seen the closet with her wardrobe in it, but oh wellz. And then when they “decided” to get married I couldn’t help but giggle! The almost-wedding scene was so upsetting, especially since you’re watching what’s going on with the both of them at the same time, and yet Carrie has no clue! I felt so sad when she got out of that car and hit him with the flowers. Thank God for Louis and her spirit because seeing Carrie down for so long was heartwrenching. And Big’s proposal? One of the most romantic gestures of all time! ♥

Oh Miranda and Steve! It was so sad at first, but when they reunited on the bridge I cried! First off I was surprised that it had been 6 months since they had nooky; there were a few episodes where Miranda was like, “OMG 3 MONTHS I NEED SEX!” and yet suddenly 6 months? Second, such a shocker Steve cheated. I mean, Steve didn’t seem like that kind of person. I’m so happy they didn’t stay seperated. They’re like Carrie and Big: they’ve been through so much together for too long to not be with each other.

I was a little sad over how it ended, but I loved the way they did the whole Samantha/Smith thing in LA. For one thing, fans of House will notice they totally incorporated Smith’s whole Doctor-on-a-TV-show thing! I got such a kick out of that. Oh and the sushi all over Samantha’s body was just hilarious, especially when the phone was ringing. The horny neighbor (whose penis we saw, bwee hee!) was pretty hot, and such a hoot with Samantha being a peepin-tom. I didn’t get why they had to have her get a dog though. To me it showed no point whatsoever. Same with her eating to replace cheating. She didn’t even look fat so I don’t know what they were talking about!

Charlotte brought so much humor to this movie! Especially the most unforgettable part when she crapped her pants from drinking the water in Mexico! So classic! I really liked her character, everything from her getting insanely angry at Big to her getting so angry she broke her water! And her finally getting pregnant! What a blessing!

Despite having to sit in the very front row, I enjoyed the movie immensely. I loved everything about it. Such a treat! I’m hoping to see it a few more times with better seating arrangements!

WORTH CONSUMING!

God help me, because after all this was the ultimate “chick flick”; it’s just that I liked the concept of friendship that was portrayed over and over.
Yvonne and I were the ONLY people in the theatre watching this.

Simple, flawed and at times interesting - but the show rules — 1 year ago

As I’ve watched every episode in the series, I was quite hungry to see how this one would make the transition from TV to the cinema. The answer to your question? It did, although flawed. As Carrie and her three compadrinas continue four years after the point where the TV-show ended, I thought of two things: the film started off generally better than the last season of the show, and whoa, this film is almost as much a big commercial for certain designers as I, Robot helped to sell everything from stereos to TV’s. Apart from that, the story circles Carrie, the central character from the show, and at times her friends. As the film is supposed to be a super-sized version of the show, it contains twists that the HBO-format never contained, as well as having everything sex turned way down. All in all, the story is quite thin and at times makes me think the writer/director of this piece should have made room for more input. Still, I don’t think the planned theatrica follow-up will do this film any justice. What cards are left to be played? Charlotte having a child? Will the girls get political? Methinks HBO will have more in store for all of us, rather than more SATC-films.
