Charming — 1 year ago
I had a smile on my face throughout this movie. It holds a charm that reminds me a bit of Amélie Poulain. I don’t know how to describe that exactly – soft humour with a touch of bittersweet and a lot of warmth?
Anyhow, Babette’s Feast takes place in a remote seaside village in Jutland, Denmark in the 1870s. A French refugee (Babette) is working as a cook/housekeeper for 2 devote elderly sisters. In the first part of the movie we find out how they ended up together. The second part shows us their current living situation. And in the final part Babette, wanting to repay the sisters for their hospitality, prepares a French dinner – a real feast. People go on about the food in this movie, and yes it looks scrumptious, but the best part to me was the reaction of the villagers and the look on their faces, before and throughout the dinner. “I’m afraid it may be a witches’ sabbath” – to mimicing the more sofisticated general’s behaviour. Haa, French food, it is one of my favourite things in life too. And the ending was done very well I thought, tying up the loose ends for both sisters.
I wish they’d make more movies like this.
