A story about this — 7 years ago
I hadn’t read anything by Kage Baker before I bought this collection, but now that I’ve read these stories I’m definitely going to be looking for her other books.
These stories weren’t a huge change from the Manly Wade Wellman stories I had been reading earlier in the week — like most fantasy/sf short stories, a strong horror bent is evident.
While I enjoyed almost all the stories (“Miss Yahoo Speaks” left me a bit cold), my favorite was “Nightmare Mountain”, based on the real Sarah Winchester and her house in San Jose (known today as the Winchester Mystery House), largely because of that connection. I also liked “The Briscian Saint” and the stories about Lord Ermenwyr and, of course, the Tyger.
