A little bit different from the average romantic comedy — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

McConaughey still lives at home. Mom and Dad want him out, so they hire Sarah Jessica Parker to fake a romance and trick him into moving out, then break up. Of course, Parker falls for McConaughey. Not much that you can’t “see coming” but several moments made me laugh (Terry Bradshaw has a nice supporting role) and it was worth 1 night as a “popcorn” movie. Solidly OK.

WORTH CONSUMING!

We just rented some videos… you know how it goes. Only this movie went back on the last day and we watched it continuiously. teehee. Everyone in the family thought it was funny.
I move to have Champagne Thursday.. and that it should be celebrated twice a week!

The psychological stuff is funnier than I expected (although when did I become a person who commiserates about kids that never move out?), and SJP and MMC give the slightly bland but utterly charming performances romcom requires.

The main flaw of the direction lies in the handling of the slapstick and animal violence elements that are totally out of control. The main flaw of the script is the finale’s contrived voyerism of the main characters’ family and friends (with some new, cooky strangers thrown in for good measure). It’s as though the filmmakers suspected that audiences would like the side orders more than the main course. Which, to be fair, we do. Unfortunately, when side orders provide commentary on the desert it inspires me to hurl.

Met my non-existent expectations — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The only reason I wanted to see this movie was because Bradley Cooper was in it. He’s fabulous and deserves more fame and work than he’s currently got. Totally formulamatic, but I laughed along with the opening-weekend crowd. I thought the cast was well-suited for their rolls. A fun time.

Would Have Been Better WITHOUT Sarah Jessica Parker — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Zooey Deschanel was great! Matthew McC was charming as ever but I just don’t like Sarah Jessica Parker. Terry Bradshaw did a great job in his role as Matthew McC’s father, too. If you don’t have really high expectations, you will probably like it. (I did.)

WORTH CONSUMING!

It was OK—a slight twist on the usual. I would have rated this “wishy-washy” if that had been an option.

Well it was like every other Hollywood production, you could have guessed that. BUT Zooey Deschanel in the role of the pessimistic roommate SAVED the movie. I mean, she took ALL the attention.
Well, at least from me. Oh damned, I’ve already seen her in Almost Famous and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but now I finally realised who she is. What she is.
