A quirky fairytale of a love story — 14 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Another reviewer stated that this movie was too fairytale for their taste, which is a perfect description of the film and the reason why I adore it.
The movie is set in current time so it’s not a fairytale as in “Once upon a time in a land far away”, but it’s the episodes of their relationship that bring them closer together that make this qualifiable as a fairytale. No sane person would actually accept taking in an unwanted relative due to a losing hand in poker, but that’s exactly what sets up this story.
Everyone played their part brilliantly in the movie, particularly Johnny Depp and Mary Stewart Masterson as two adults in body with the minds and hearts of eternal children. It’s a sweet, feel-good, funny film.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I watched this on basic-cable TV. Maybe something got edited out for broadcast that was important to the story. I don’t know. For whatever reason, I was disappointed with it. Mary Stuart Masterson did an excellent job as a bipolar woman (I could really relate—I know someone who’s bipolar, so her performance gave me chills). Otherwise the story seemed a bit too fairy-tale for my taste.
