I’m not really sure how to rate this movie. I liked the characters, they were well thought through. I also like the idea of the jailer, the convict, the convict’s wife and how all the threads ran together. Plot with lots of lines, that always works for me.
Then there were a lot of pointless sex scenes. I thought Dutch movies were good at those, but apparently American movies have caught on. I get the feeling they were meant for some shock value or something, and apparently if it’s artistic there have to be naked women in it. But as far as plots go, I didn’t really see the point. Though the plot was interesting, the movie moves along very slowly. Also, for some reason I didn’t really connect with the characters. I didn’t much like Hank since he moved from right wing to left at lightning speed and I couldn’t grasp that really, in both Leticia and Hank I couldn’t connect with their grief, which in this movie is pretty essential, I couldn’t pin the movie in a certain timeframe…
The ending left me feeling icky. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, good movies tend to do that too, but… I just don’t know. It’s worth seeing, but I probably won’t see it again.
