I have enjoyed many Kurosawa films in the past, but I found RAN a little battle focussed, and maybe too long. It was nice to look at, for the most part, and an interesting take on the trope of Lear.

I watched Ran this evening with Subhy (his Netflix choice). It’s Japanese movie from 1985 based on King Lear, and I have mixed feelings about it. The one thing it has in its favor is some moment of stunning cinematography. Otherwise, I found it difficult to follow (probably not helped by the fact that I’ve never read, seen, or studied King Lear) and overly long (2 hours and 40 minutes). I wouldn’t call it a wasted evening, but I was also glad I wasn’t watching it in a cinema.
