Raising Helen — 6 years ago
Overall this was an entertaining likable movie. That said, there were a few things that almost made me laugh hysterically just in the preposterousness of the such things in the real world. Like, I don’t know, maybe its just me, but I have a hard time seeing a Luthran pastor doing some of the things the character in the movie did. Now I could see how they kind of worked themselves into a quandry…where basically they wanted to imitate catholic school, except that for there to be a romance sub-plot, we can’t have him being a catholic priest, so uhhh, lets change him from catholic to protestant, that’s right. Nevermind the fact that the “pastor’s” way of showing his interest in Helen is by attempting to kissing her (and her freaking out and trying to back away and resist), and he doesn’t even seem to think twice about asking-out a non-christian girl in the first place…perhaps he’d be believable as just a principal…but as a god-fearing protestant? Not hardly. But there I go nitpicking about minor parts of the movie…and totally ingoring the more significant plots about the kids.
Oh and I liked the (is this a blooper?) where you can catch a glimpse of what looks like a california drivers licence in a movie supposed to be set in new york.
