This one converted me into a Heather fan — 5 years ago
This is one of those CDs that remained in my CD player for a long, long time.
I do not usually like her type of voice. Too thin for my taste. Even strained at times. When I hear her hit the high notes, my throat feels constricted for her. Give me Nina Storey anytime.
In fact when I first heard her I thought she sounded like fingernails on the blackboard when she goes high.
But now I’m a convert. What used to sound thin now sounds wispy. Her whispery vocals that used to put me to sleep now resonate with the lulling lazy afternoon rhythm. And I just realised that she has this subtle lilt in her voice that is so beautiful.
And who would have thought that her wispiness would be able to attain lushness? Well, somehow Nova did. In Welcome, I absolutely adore her pseudo-rock star delivery before that lush backdrop of layered vocals. If I Saw You In A Movie’s another lush one, with a really catchy refrain that left me haunted for hours.
Gloomy Sunday is imho the most beautiful track in the album. I’ve a weakness for strings, and the cello in GS is utterly gorgeous. Reminiscent of Bjork actually. The melody is almost as quirky. Just less caustic. It goes down my throat like honey.
Just Been Born: Very To Venus and Back. Very electronic-era Tori. Tori can sink almost comfortably into this song.
She sounds so in love in this album, listening to her makes you SO happy.
