A story about this — 1 year ago
The flaws: a bitty plot (blame the book(s)!); not the cast most people would have chosen; something uniquely British in the production values.
The good: it’s Discworld! :)
Actually sticks to the plot fairly well, as I remember it (admittedly I have a duff memory), which is both the biggest flaw and really rather unavoidable. The weaknesses of the adaption are the weaknesses of the book: remember, this was Pratchett’s first real foray onto the Disc, and he didn’t know he was going to get another chance or thirty. Thus, we really just have far too much crammed in, jumping from one scene to the next with the slimmest of plots to keep us going.
The real joy here is watching all the little bits bringing the Disc to life. Okay, so David Jason didn’t meet the mental image of Rincewind at all, but Death is just fabulous, with Christopher Lee perfect for the funny little asides (“I think -” oh, ‘scuse me: I THINK I’VE JUST HAD ANOTHER NEAR-RINCEWIND EXPERIENCE). ::grin::
Surprisingly, even the non-Discworld fan in the household thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s silly, it’s fun, and it’s totally inoffensive. And while the story’s not as polished as Hogfather, the film making is a bit better, imo. Here’s hoping more of the series can get a look in – it’s fun! :)
