Very bollywood — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s tacky, it’s very bollywood and very watchable. This isn’t a movie that’s gonna rock your world, but it’s cute and colorful. I wouldn’t have gone to the cinema for it, bvut watching it at home on a sleepy sunday evening worked out fine.

Colourful adaptation — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I loved the colours in this movie, especially in the first wedding. I hope I can one day attend a real Indian wedding, it seems like a fun party.

You don’t have to be familiar with Pride & Prejudice to enjoy this light musical, but it is interesting to compare the original story with this modern adaptation. Austen’s characters hold up pretty well with time, especially mother Bennet remains a classic character which fits perfectly in this Indian family.

Some parts are a bit ridiculous though (that beach number!), but that’s part of the fun :)

WORTH CONSUMING!

I plan to watch everything related to Jane Austen and this movie intrigued me. I had never seen a Bollywood movie and was a bit curious to see how P&P could fit in the Indian modern world.

It’s a… weird movie. It’s not bad, I enjoyed it quite enough, but it’s just surprising. Somehow I didn’t know it was a musical and when they burst into song I was a bit freaked out!!! But it’s really an interesting adaptation effort. I loved to see all the parallels they drew between the original and how it might translate in our world – like the London/country being changed into America/India. I didn’t much care for some changes though, like having Lady Catherine be Darcy’s mother or removing a Bennett sister.

The acting was quite good, and everybody were good singers. I was surprised to recognise way more people than I though – Naveen Andrews of course and Alexis Bledel (what a surprise! She’s good though). Aishwarya Rai was a good “Lalita” even though she was so gorgeous that it undermined a bit the fact that Darcy falls mostly for her wit and brilliance.

So I’d mostly recommend this for Jane Austen fans who are open-minded!

Why I recommend this — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I like nearly anything that is Jane Austen-inspired. Plus, the music makes me want to get up and bellydance!

This one I’ve watched 3 times, making it to my short list of movies purposefully seen more than once.

This is a wonderfully fun movie and a nice take on the Austen lark. It’s full of vibrancy, extragavance and enjoyment.

Watch it with the girls.

Lalita: Only you could say that you love me

and insult me at the same time.

It’s a million years long, but the dance numbers are ridiculous and amazing. Best one: no life without wife. Most ridiculous one: main characters are falling in love on a beach, gospel choir appears behind them, surfers run out of the water, lifeguards run down from their chairs, and they all SURROUND them and tell them “This is the way to love!”

I watched this with Christine and Amy.

Mild as far as Bollywood goes, lively as far as Jane Austen goes. This is a fun interpretation that also allows for some of the deeper social questions brought up in Austen’s novel: how are women colonized? How can they love, please their families, please society, without sacrificing themselves? And yeah, fun soundtrack! Well done.

This is a cute movie. I first saw it on Valentine’s day. Then got the DVD. It’s sweet, light, and colourful, with a great soundtrack.
