I’m a huge fan of the Hellboy comics, and even though the movie takes some liberties with the source material, it’s still fantastic. The story is exciting and fun with some admittedly corny situations, but they don’t really feel out of place as the comic combines horror and humour rather well. The actors do good work, with obvious honours going to Ron Perlman for turning in a magnificent performance. His facial expressions limited behind a sometimes unforgiving mask, his eyes and body language give you everything you need to know in every scene. Technically speaking, the sets are perfect, the makeup’s amazing (no Oscar nomination, how can that be?), and the special effects are fresh and creative. And for those who care, the director’s cut DVD set gives you hours and hours of featurettes, commentaries, and behind-the-scenes documentaries that are informative as well as entertaining in their own right. All told, Hellboy is a rip-roaring adventure that feels just like a comic brought to life – just like it should.

Another fav. Love Perlman as Red. It might be a bit cheesy, but hey, cheese is good.
